Faces on the Hill
A collaborative project bringing together MassArt painting students, Mission Hill business owners and patrons, culminating in the exhibition and auction of Mission Hill Portraits. Launched by MassArt’s Gallery Education Department, The Center for Art and Community Partnerships, and Mission Hill Main Streets.
Event Description
MassArt’s Gallery Education Department, the Center for Art and Community Partnerships, and Mission Hill Main Streets join together to announce Faces on the Hill, an exciting new college/community collaboration. Between February 2nd and 28th, MassArt students Anna Kriger and Kit Lagreze will set up their easels in prominent Mission Hill locations. The public is welcome to watch as they paint portraits of local business owners— men and women selected by Mission Hill Main Streets, a civic organization that strives to maintain the neighborhood feeling of its commercial district.
Faces on the Hill is organized in conjunction with MassArt’s exhibition Figuratively Seeing, which features the work of eleven professional painters using the figure to explore symbolic, narrative, fictional, and allegorical content. Figuratively Seeing runs January 21st – March 3rd in the Bakalar Gallery of MassArt’s South Hall, 621 Huntington Avenue.
The public is encouraged to visit the MassArt galleries for Family Day, a one day opportunity to view the finished portraits of Faces on the Hill in exhibition before they are auctioned (at a Mission Hill Main Streets fund raiser). On Saturday February 28th, MassArt’s gallery education staff will host a fun, first-ever Family Day. Art Education students will be on hand to staff this event, which features guided discussions, art making, and interactive activities related to the exhibitions key ideas and materials.
Visitors at Family Day will be excited to receive information about other public events, collaborations, and youth programs. MassArt staff will be on hand to distribute information Saturday Studios, Creative Vacation, Extreme Week, Summer Studios, Looking to Learn, Art Jumpoff, and more. These programs offer high quality art making opportunities for young people from grades 4 – 12. Scholarships are available upon request. This effort is part of a college-wide initiative to increase community access to our youth programs.
