Call for Art
Sparring Partners window gallery at 635 Huntington Ave
Proposals sought for community gallery space administered by Mission Hill Main Streets, Mass College of Art and Design, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Harvard School of Public Health. 635 Huntington Avenue was the site of Sparr's Drugstore from 1936 until 2002, when Arthur Sparr retired, selling the building to Harvard University. Responding to urgings from the community to improve this extremely visible corner, Harvard agreed to collaborate with Mass Art, the Museum School and Mission Hill community on a shared exhibit space. Throughout the year, both of the art schools and members of the community coordinate shows, filling the windows with art of all media and offering passers-by joyful and thought-provoking experiences.
Individuals, groups, and multi-institution partnerships are encouraged to submit proposals for 6-week shows in Sparring Partners. To propose a show, please submit:
- 5 or more slides, digital images or other images of work to be included in proposed show (could also be images of work in progress or pieces representative of the proposed show’s content)
- A list including titles, materials, and dimensions of works
- Artist’s statement
- Contact information for show organizer including phone number, address, and e-mail
- Self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like proposal materials returned after review
Proposals received will be considered for future shows on an ongoing basis.
In creating a proposal, be aware of the following considerations:
- This is a public exhibition program for the Mission Hill/Longwood community. Any work exhibited will be on display in a public location accessible to all who drive or walk by. Be mindful of what is appropriate for public display. With this in mind, the partners reserve the right to make final decisions on the nature of exhibits and the individual works proposed for show.
- Works of art need to conform to the physical limitations of the window spaces. The following are some of the features of the windows:
- The window spaces are approximately 18” deep. A plan with dimensions of the exhibition area is available upon request.
- A flexible lighting system has been installed to facilitate the exhibit of a range of materials and media.
- Electric power is available in all of the window spaces.
- Windows receive substantial sunlight. Pieces placed in windows are subject to fading or sun damage.
- The fabric surface of exhibition windows may not be modified or damaged in any way.
- Installation and removal of works of art will be scheduled during business hours through the partners, with a member present at all times to facilitate entry to the building. Exhibit organizers are responsible for installation and de-installation. Limited supplies for installation are available.
- Artists are responsible for the packing and safe transportation of works to and from the exhibition site.
- Participating artists assume all risk for the safety of works of art displayed.
