Student Volunteers
-- A Few Words from the New Executive Director

Greetings!

Students often get picked on in this community. People complain about them causing street noise and having loud parties. Some of the criticism is valid some is exaggerated. The fact is that students are an important part of the neighborhood and city economy. They are overcharged for substandard housing and are often the victims of crime and are rarely the perpetrators (according to one police source).

On Martin Luther King Day a group of Northeastern students led by Chris Nichols, a chaplain at the school, dedicated their time to provide community service. Today ML King day is being described as a day of service, not a day off. Chris and his crew spent the day cleaning, painting and readying office space at 1534 Tremont St. home to non-profit organizations including Mission Hill Main Streets, Mission Hill Health Movement and the Alliance to Defend Health Care. Chris and his group have been involved in neighborhood clean-ups and other volunteer work in the Mission Hill area and can be reached at www.shawmutspring.org.

Elvin Diaz-Bock, who is a full time student at Wentworth, works as an intern project manager with our organization. He also is a volunteer in the free tax preparation program sponsored by Wentworth Institute. These are just a few examples of the good things that Students are doing in the neighborhood. Students are a vital part of the community and the economics of the city in general.It's time they were recognized for the good work they do.

Walk Historic Mission Hill Brochures
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perhaps sometime in the last few years you joined the Friends of Historic Mission Hill on a walking tour of the neighborhood - you may have learned about past residents, historic architecture, or the industry that once flourished in the community.
MHMS and the Friends of Historic Mission Hill have taken that tour and produced a Walking Tour brochure for Mission Hill. With funding from the Mission Hill-Fenway Neighborhood Trust and the Boston Society of Architects, and design assistance from Red Sun Press in Jamaica Plain. A Walking Tour will be held to celebrate the release of the brochure, but has not yet been scheduled.If you would like a copy call the MHMS office 617-427-7399 or stop by and pick one up at 1534 Tremont St.
Committee Reports
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sean Bender Vice President of the MHMS Board of Directors and Director of The Center for Community & Learning Partnerships at Wentworth Institute of Technology has submitted the following report from the Economic Restructuring Committee.

Market Research Update- A team of Wentworth students and faculty have been working to update the market research study originally prepared for Main Streets back in 2000. The new study will include the latest market and demographic data and original data collected by teams of students through the intercept survey and traffic count. The report will build a foundation in developing marketing studies, retaining and recruiting businesses and establishing strategic priorities.

Building & Business Inventory- Another team of faculty and students ( also from Wentworth) is working to developed an interactive geographic database to track building and business information. Similar to the Market Research Study, this inventory will serve as a tool for retaining existing businesses and recruiting new enterprises to this community.

MHMS Committee Members Needed

Mission Hill Main Streets (MHMS) is currently accepting letters of interest from community members interested in becoming committee members. Interested candidates should submit a letter describing their interest in MHMS and how they can contribute to the organization and the Mission Hill community. Submission of a resume is strongly encouraged.

Committee members commit 2-4 hours per month to the organization. We want members who are enthusiastic, interested in the community and willing to dedicate time and resources to MHMS. The committees are: Design (which works to improve the physical appearance of the district through a Facade Improvement Program and public improvements), Promotion (which takes responsibility for the coordination of MHMS events and helps market the district through walking tours, the website and our Mission Hill Map Guide), Organization (which works to recruit new members and helps with fundraising activities), or Economic Restructuring (which provides assistance to business owners, recruits appropriate tenants, helps businesses find sites and assistance, and holds business networking events.)
