About Us

Abdullah Abdirahman, AKA "Armaggio"(meaning armoire in Italian, because he's not big as one), AKA "Mash" is the smiling Somalia-born owner of Butterfly Coffee, which shares a roof with the Roxbury Crossing T station in Mission Hill. With unframed artwork on the walls, young dred-headed baristas behind the counter, congregations of Somali men on the couches in one corner and money transfer services in another, Butterfly Coffee is a very comfy, come-as-you-are cafe. Mash started serving food and drinks as an extension of his money transfer business about four years ago. For six years before that, he'd been watching morning commuters trudge up to Brigham Circle and come back with a bag from Dunkin' Donuts, so he realized that his was a prime location for a coffee shop. Now, he loves his business. He is up at 5:00 every morning and opens the cafe seven days a week, and his friends and employees say he's never sad, always smiling.
